When does the Atari VCS store shut down?
Feb. 1, 2027. Atari is closing the Atari VCS software store that day and ending support for the platform after one last OS update. Games and apps you've already downloaded keep working. Anything you haven't bought by the end of January, you won't be able to.
Atari announced it on Oct. 21 in a post on its Atari Club Discord, quoted in full by Delisted Games and VGC, and added a shorter notice to its official VCS page. That page also says Atari has stopped accepting new games for the store and that direct sales of the hardware ended in 2025. If you were waiting for a price drop, that ship has sailed too.
The dates
- Oct. 21, 2026: Shutdown announced. No new games are being onboarded.
- Jan. 31, 2027: Last day to buy, according to the Discord announcement.
- Feb. 1, 2027: Store closes.
- After that: An OS update moves everything onto your own box, and then Atari ends support.
- "Early next year": Atari promises instructions for the migration and the Home Brew app.
Atari's own website words it a little differently, saying owners can purchase "through February 1, 2027." The Discord post is more specific and says Jan. 31. If you plan to buy something, buy it on Jan. 31 at the latest and don't count on Feb. 1.
Reader questions
Will my VCS stop working? Atari says no. Once the store closes, it plans to ship an update that lets you "migrate all functionality to your local machine, removing any dependencies on Atari infrastructure for authentication and software." In other words, the box should stop checking in with Atari's servers to confirm you own your games. That is the generous end of how these shutdowns usually go.
Can I redownload my games later? No. Atari's lead Discord moderator told players that once games are migrated to your local VCS, you will "not be able to redownload games from the store." If the internal storage fails, or you wipe it, those purchases are probably gone. Download everything you own before Feb. 1 and leave it there.
What is the Home Brew app? Atari says it will push an Atari Home Brew app to every VCS so owners can install games themselves and developers can keep making and sharing software after the store is gone. Details are due early 2027. Nothing about how it works has been published yet.
What about PC Mode? Atari's announcement doesn't mention it. The VCS has always been able to boot Linux or Windows, and nothing in the notice suggests that changes, but Atari hasn't said so directly.
Refunds? The announcement doesn't mention any.
How it got here
The VCS spent years in development before it reached Kickstarter backers in December 2020 and went on general sale in 2021. It was a small AMD-powered Linux PC styled after the 2600, and The Verge notes its store eventually leaned on streaming apps and cloud gaming services. Delisted Games counts just over 300 games and apps released on the store over its life, and seven more arrived in a hurry after the announcement.
Atari calls the VCS "a one-off Kickstarter program" that it turned into a platform. Six years of support for a one-off is more than a lot of crowdfunded hardware gets.
Bottom line
The Atari VCS store closes Feb. 1, 2027. Buy anything you want by Jan. 31, download everything you own, and don't plan on redownloading after the migration. Atari is promising an offline-friendly OS update and a homebrew app, which is a softer landing than most dead storefronts get. Instructions are due early next year.
