Is The Division 2 shutting down? Only in China, on Dec. 14

Tencent will close The Division 2's mainland China servers on Dec. 14, 2026. The global game on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Ubisoft Connect keeps running, with a new DLC due Nov. 3.

In mainland China, yes. Everywhere else, no. Tencent announced on Oct. 12 that it will stop running The Division 2 in mainland China on Dec. 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Beijing time. That's 8 p.m. Phoenix and 7 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, Dec. 13.

The global version on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Ubisoft Connect isn't part of this. Ubisoft's next paid expansion, Echoes of Central Park, is still scheduled for Nov. 3. If you play outside China, the main change for you this week is a headline that looks worse than it is.

What's closing

The China version is a separate release. Tencent published it on its WeGame platform under a deal announced in 2021, and it opened in November 2023. It will have run for just over three years.

The operations team gave its reason as a "change in business development strategy," reached after "friendly consultation with the developer," according to IT Home and Beijing News. No player numbers or revenue figures were given.

The dates (Beijing time)

  • Oct. 12, 11:00: Top-ups and new account registrations stopped. This already happened.
  • Dec. 14, 11:00: Servers and the official site at td2.qq.com shut down. Nobody can log in.
  • Dec. 22, 11:00: The forum and dedicated customer support close.

After the servers close, Tencent says it will delete account and character data under China's Personal Information Protection Law. The China version can't be played offline.

Reader questions

Is The Division 2 shutting down on Steam or consoles? No. Nothing in the announcement touches the global game. Ubisoft posted the Echoes of Central Park date on Sept. 24 and is also recruiting testers for The Division 2 Survivors. A publisher planning a November expansion is generally not also planning a December funeral.

Can players in China move their characters to the global version? The announcement doesn't offer a transfer. It describes compensation and deletion, and that's all.

What happens to unspent Premium Credits in the China version? They don't come back as cash. Players who topped up before Oct. 12 can trade unspent paid Premium Credits for gift packs in other Tencent games, including Honor of Kings, Peacekeeper Elite, VALORANT, and CrossFire. The tiers, per IT Home:

  • Up to 1,000 credits: one pack worth 10 yuan.
  • Up to 10,000: one pack worth 100 yuan.
  • Up to 50,000: one pack worth 500 yuan.
  • Above 50,000: one 500-yuan pack per 50,000 credits, rounded up.

Unexpired paid month or week cards get converted into credits for this at 1 yuan to 100 credits. Free credits don't count. Players who skip the compensation event before it ends give up the right to claim it.

Is The Division 2 dying globally? Not by the numbers we track. Steam Charts shows an average of about 6,100 concurrent players on Steam over the last 30 days, with a peak of 11,575, up about 18% on September. That's Steam alone. It doesn't count Ubisoft Connect or consoles, where most of the game's players have always been. Live numbers are on our Division 2 page.

Bottom line

The Division 2 is closing in mainland China on Dec. 14, 2026, three years after Tencent launched it there. Players there should claim their compensation and save any screenshots they care about. Everyone else can carry on shooting at the same people in the same New York, and in about three weeks, a slightly greener part of it.
