Tank Royale servers are offline: studio closed, devs say don't buy it

Tank Royale's servers went offline with no warning after its developer closed. The team asked Valve to delist it and told players not to buy the $9.99 Steam game.

Tank Royale, the small top-down tank battle royale on Steam, is done. The developer posted a shutdown notice on November 4, 2026 saying its company has closed, the team has disbanded, and the game's dedicated servers are already offline. No countdown, no final event. Just a notice, and a request that you please not buy it.

Is Tank Royale shut down?

Yes. From the official Steam announcement, titled "[Notice] Tank Royale Service Shutdown":

"Following the closure of our company and the disbandment of our team, we are no longer able to maintain the game's dedicated servers. As a result, the servers have been taken offline, and online matchmaking and multiplayer gameplay are no longer available."

The team also said it has "submitted an urgent request to Valve to remove Tank Royale from sale on Steam," and apologized "for this sudden shutdown and for being unable to provide advance notice."

Is it still for sale?

At the time of writing, yes. The Steam store page still lists Tank Royale at $9.99 and still pitches online battle royale for up to 10 players. The developers' own advice is blunt:

"Please DO NOT purchase the game, as its online services are no longer functional."

Delisting requests move on Valve's schedule, so the store page may linger. When a developer asks you not to give them money, it's worth listening.

Can you still play anything?

Possibly a little. The store page lists Base Defense, a PvE mode it describes as "fully playable offline," with local two-player support. We haven't confirmed whether the game still launches into that mode now that the servers are down. The battle royale, duo mode, rankings and anything else that touched a server are gone.

What was Tank Royale?

A cartoonish tank brawler from BSS Company. It entered Steam Early Access on April 1, 2019, which in hindsight was a date with some foreshadowing. Ten players dropped into a shrinking map, grabbed power-ups and tried to be the last tank standing. A free "Royale Edition" let anyone play the battle royale, and the paid version added duo mode, tank customization and the offline PvE mode.

Before this week, the last update announcement on its Steam news feed was from December 2019. The game sat in Early Access for more than seven years without a full release, and then the company behind it closed.

Refunds?

The notice doesn't mention any. Steam's standard refund policy covers purchases made within 14 days with under two hours of playtime, so recent buyers can file through Steam support. Everyone else bought into Early Access, which comes with no guarantee the game ever finishes, or keeps running.

The takeaway

Most shutdowns come with a date. This one came in the past tense. The studio is gone, the servers are off, and the store page will keep advertising matchmaking until Valve gets to the ticket.
