When does New World shut down? Jan. 31, 2027

New World: Aeternum goes offline on all platforms Jan. 31, 2027. It's delisted, the cash shop is closed, and about 400 Steam players remain. Here's what still works.

Jan. 31, 2027. That's when Amazon Games takes New World: Aeternum offline "from all platforms," per its official wind-down post. As of today, Oct. 11, 2026, that's 112 days away. After that date, nobody can log in on any platform. There's no offline mode.

The date isn't new. Amazon announced it in January. It's back in the news this weekend because players on X have been posting old footage and arguing about what went wrong, which is what people do when an MMO has about three and a half months left.

The timeline

  • October 2025: Amazon says Season 10, Nighthaven, is the final content update. It makes Nighthaven free.
  • Jan. 15, 2026: The game is delisted. Nobody can buy it anymore. The shutdown date is announced.
  • July 20, 2026: The in-game store closes. No more Marks of Fortune or anything else.
  • Jan. 31, 2027: Servers go offline permanently on every platform.

Reader questions

Can I still play New World? Yes, if you already own it. Amazon says owners can keep playing on the platform they bought it on until Jan. 31, 2027.

Can I still buy it? No. It's been delisted everywhere since Jan. 15, 2026.

I deleted it. Can I reinstall? Yes. Amazon's FAQ says previous buyers "can download and install the game again."

Can I get a refund on Marks of Fortune? No. Amazon says flatly that "refunds are not available for Marks of Fortune purchases." You couldn't buy more after July 20, and whatever you still have is worth nothing after Jan. 31.

Is anything still being updated? Bug fixes, sort of. There's no new content and no more server merges, but Amazon says it will "continue to monitor bugs and performance." The Nighthaven season has been extended until the servers shut down, so the current season is the last one.

Will there be private servers or an offline version? Amazon hasn't announced either. The Steam page still says "this is an online-only game; no offline mode is supported."

Is New World dead? It will be on Jan. 31. Until then it keeps running with no new content and a known end date.

How many people are still playing?

At launch, a lot. New World hit 913,634 concurrent players on Steam on Oct. 3, 2021, according to SteamDB. That's one of the biggest launches in Steam history, and it's a big part of why the ending stings.

These days, the numbers are smaller. Steam Charts shows about 21,000 average players in October 2025, when the free Nighthaven update arrived. The average fell to 934 in January after the shutdown date was announced, then to 446 in September. The last 30 days average 414, with a peak of 749. When we checked Steam this morning, 338 people were online. Console players aren't counted in those numbers, so the real total is higher, but nobody outside Amazon knows how much higher.

The game has 297,445 Steam reviews, and the overall rating is Mixed. That fits how it went: a huge launch, then years of patches, a console relaunch as Aeternum, and a wind-down after Amazon decided to step back from MMOs.

Bottom line

New World: Aeternum shuts down for good on Jan. 31, 2027. If you own it, you have 112 days to log in, take screenshots of your house, and say goodbye to your guild. The game is delisted, the shop is closed, and Amazon isn't offering refunds. We'll mark it dead on Jan. 31. Until then, our 2026 shutdowns list has everything else that's closing first.
