Tetris Block Party is gone. PlayStudios ended the mobile spin-off at 11:59 p.m. Pacific on October 31, per the game's support notice as reported by Fluxgamer, and Mobilegamer.biz wrote it up on November 2, two days after the lights went out.
The help center that explained the shutdown has since shut down too. As of November 3, the Tetris Block Party support pages return a 404.
Can I still play Tetris Block Party?
No. The service ended with the October 31 cutoff, and PlayStudios never announced an offline version or a replacement, according to TalkEsport. The game no longer appears on PlayStudios' own games page, and it didn't turn up in a search of the US App Store on November 3.
If you still have the icon on your phone, it's a souvenir.
What happened to my coins and items?
They went with the servers. The support notice told players to spend remaining currency, items and rewards before the deadline, after which they'd be unavailable, Fluxgamer reports. There's no transfer into another Tetris game.
In-app purchases had already been switched off on October 6, so nobody could buy anything during the final weeks. TalkEsport did note that the App Store listing kept showing priced packs (up to $179.99) after that date, though it couldn't confirm any purchase actually went through.
Can I get a refund?
Maybe, but not from PlayStudios directly. Its refund FAQ pointed players to Apple and Google, which handle requests under their own policies, per Fluxgamer. That's the same arrangement most mobile shutdowns use, including Catalyst Black's. Nobody promised a blanket refund.
Why did it shut down?
The paperwork is public. A Form 8-K dated October 6 says the company decided on September 30 to cease operating Tetris Block Party, expected to do so in October, and would take a non-cash impairment charge of $3.0 million to $3.5 million in the third quarter. Most of that is capitalized software and acquired technology tied to the game.
The game wasn't nothing. AppMagic estimates it made about $8.1 million in in-app purchases from 5.6 million downloads, Mobilegamer reports, not counting ads or web store sales. It just wasn't enough for a company in the middle of shrinking. PlayStudios' "Renewal" restructuring closed four of its nine studios and cut 177 jobs, according to Mobilegamer, and the company reports third-quarter results on November 9.
Is Tetris dead on mobile?
No. PlayStudios still runs its main Tetris app, which Mobilegamer says has been downloaded about 115 million times since 2020. Block Party was a spin-off.
It also wasn't the first. Mobilegamer counts Tetris Block Blast, Tetris World Tour and Tetris Story as earlier PlayStudios Tetris games that launched and then closed. The pattern is consistent: the original block game keeps going, and the experiments built around it get cleared away.
That's on brand, at least.
